Wal-Mart collaborates for Cleaner Production in Central America

A partnership has been launched aiming at increasing cleaner production and energy efficiency in El Salvador and Guatemala.

Conducted through the US Department of State funded ‘Cleaner Production Private Sector Partnership', the project has teamed-up Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., with The World Environment Center (WEC), an independent non-for-profit and non-advocacy organisation.

The collaboration will work with more than 24 small to medium-sized local suppliers to provide technical assistance in the areas including energy and water savings and raw material and emissions reductions.

Dr Terry F Yosie, president and CEO of the WEC, described Wal-Mart's role as being crucial in promoting sustainable economic development in these local communities. Suppliers will also be given assistance in the implementation of environmental management systems and accessing financial sources.

According to president and CEO of Wal-Mart's for the Americas, Craig Herkert, the partnership with WEC in this region will able them to share practices and support businesses in the communities where they operate in.
