Police use bubbles to fight crime in Greater Manchester
It may not sound like the most obvious weapon against violent crime but, believe it or not, bubbles - yes bubbles - will be usedby police in Greater Manchester to calm town centre revellers.
They'll be handed soapy mixture to blow bubbles as they make their way home at the end of weekend nights out. The bubble plan is part of Operation Sherry which aims to make Christmas as safe as possible for shoppers, business owners and party-goers in Bolton.
Police describe it as a low-cost initiative and 'something a bit different, fun and a break from the norm' - they hope it will grab the imagination of people socialising in the town centre in the lead up to Christmas.
It's been dreamed up by Bolton's Be Safe Partnership — an organisation made up of representatives from the police, council, fire service and Bolton NHS Primary Care Trust.
Be Safe members hope people will focus on blowing bubbles as they make their way home, rather than becoming rowdy and getting into trouble.
So what do you think fellow Optimists? Is is this a more cheerful way of cutting crime - and how do you like the idea of blowing bubbles as you make the way home from a night out?
