Woolworths opens doors as an online retail website
Its demise was seen, perhaps, as the biggest sign of the times - a towering High Street icon felled by an extraordinary economic downturn. Now Woolworths is back - not on the high street, but online.
"We're delighted to be bringing back Woolworths in its 100th year," said Mark Newton-Jones, Chief Executive of Shop Direct Group, the company that's taken on the former retail giant.
"From acquiring the brand to launching it has only been 20 weeks; something you could never achieve with a high street business but can do online."
Woolworths.co.uk says it's been talking to nearly a million families to find out the things that they loved about Woolies and what they wanted the business to bring back.
The new site has been developed around the four product categories - toys, kidswear, entertainment and party. Mr Newton-Jones added: "We are launching today with a significantly bigger selection of products than would have been sold in a Woolies high street store."
Woolworths was acquired by the Shop Direct Group on 2nd February. It describes itself as one of the UK's leading online and home shopping multibrand retailers. Online sales have grown from 18% in 2006 to over 56% today and it says it's on track to have 70% of its sales online by end of financial year 2010/2011.
