Motorcycle riders could be better protected by HALO crash helmet that cools the brain
A revolutionary new crash helmet will instantly deliver first aid in the form of active head cooling technology if the rider crashes.
Brain injuries cause the largest number of motorcycle accident deaths – trauma causes the brain to swell and to survive, casualties need treatment as soon as possible.
ThermaHelm Ltd has designed an impact-activated helmet Halo, which cools the head on impact, limiting neurological damage and increasing chances of survival.
The technology works by triggering a chemical reaction inside the helmet at the moment of impact, immediately cooling the rider's head and keeping it cold.
The company, based at the Sussex Innovation Centre, University of Sussex, is working with the University of Brighton - the university has received £38,000 funding for its work in boosting sales of the helmet.
