Sunbathing could boost sex life thanks to increased vitamin D and testosterone
Sun worshippers are often told the risks of sunbathing, but here's some good news for those who enjoy soaking up a few rays – it could boost your sex life.
An Austrian study has found that testosterone is boosted by vitamin D through exposure of the skin to sunlight. The study of more than two thousand men found those with good levels of the vitamin had more of the male sex hormone.
Low testosterone levels can adversely affect a man's libido as well as hitting his energy levels. It's also credited with performing essential functions in both men and women such as maintaining muscle strength and bone density.
In the 2,299 men studied by researchers from the Medical University of Graz, testosterone and vitamin D levels appeared to peak in the month of August. They hit rock bottom in March.
There are calls now for further investigation into whether vitamin D supplements would have the same effect on testosterone. But before you book a hasty beach holiday, cancer experts maintain too much sun exposure is damaging for the health. They suggest that you instead top up your levels of vitamin D by eating more foods like oily fish such as salmon, trout or mackerel.
