Squash News - Nick Matthew confirms his world number one spot after winning World Open in Holland
Yorkshire's Nick Matthew confirmed his world number one spot when he won his second successive World Open title in Holland.
The 31 year old Matthew became the first Briton to win successive World Open titles when he beat Gregory Gaultier in Rotterdam, coming from behind to beat the world number six from France 6-11 11-9 11-6 11-5.
Matthew was physically strong and much better to adapt his tactics against Gaultier with his mental strength key to this latest triumph.
He trailed by a game and 1-3 but pulled back the deficit during some fiercely prolonged rallies and some refereeing decisions which upset the Frenchman.
He said: "I stuck in, stuck in, stuck in, and just started to attack a little bit.
"I got a finger in the door, and then my body through, and saw a chink of light and went for it."
Earlier the brilliant Malaysian Nicol David won a record sixth women's World Open title with a straight games victory over England's Jenny Duncalf.
The world number one dropped only seven points as she swept past Duncalf, the world number two, 11-2 11-5 11-0 in the final.
In the women's final David took less than half an hour to complete victory in arguably her best performance in any of her six world finals. It was total annihilation against the second best player.
"It was my best performance, without doubt," she said. "I didn't expect anything. I wanted this so badly but it was a whole different experience out there this time."
