Pizza Express combining tradition with corporate social responsibility

The pizza is probably one of the world's favourite foods. Undoubtedly, appreciation for the famous circular flatbread stems from the simple (and fulfilling) pleasure it provides.

Every admirer knows that each pizza is profound for its composition and design qualities, and probably not knowing that the old rule to a pizza is that it should not exceed 35cms in diameter and its base to be hand-kneaded only.

To this day, the pizza continues to serve at every community, from being the food of the poor for its basic ingredients, to whetting the appetites of hungry American troops in Italy in WWII, to other cuisines serving their customised pizzas around the world.

PizzaExpress is one hut that has put tradition in every base, and even combining toppings with social responsibility.   Since 1975 PizzaExpress has supported the Venice in Peril Fund with the ‘Veneziana',  a pizza especially created by PizzaExpress founder Peter Boizot for the purpose, which donates 25p with every order.

After floods devastated the city in 1966, Venice in Peril was established to protect the unparalleled collection of monuments, sculptures and buildings still housed precariously within reach of the lagoon's waters.

Projects completed by the Venice in Peril Fund include the restoration of the Madonna dell'Orto and San Nicolo dei Mendicoli churches, as well as the renovation of the church of Santa Maria della Visitazione's coffered ceiling. It has also helped to pay for the rebuilding of the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, Torcello, and the re-anchoring and cleaning of the church of San Francesco della Vigna.
