New recycling education campaign reaches out to children to take the lead

Corus Steel Packaging Recycling, the UK's biggest steel recycler, is challenging the public to increase recycling by 15% and is launching an education campaign to help achieve this goal.

Currently in 2007 – 382,664 tonnes of steel packaging is recycled, which is about 56.34% (against target of 53.2%) of the total amount of packaging used in the UK.

However, there is still 296,542 tonnes of steel packaging that is being dumped in landfill, and this is why an education campaign is so vital.

The campaign, steel can recycling information bureau called SCRIB, will educate children on what is recyclable steel packaging and how to recycle it. The resource is an excellent facility for children, parents and of course teachers, with facts, videos, fun games and lesson plans all available via the SCRIB website www.scrib.org

Research shows that one of the most effective ways to increase family recycling is to encourage children to take a lead, so the SCRIB education campaign can really help.

Recycling one tonne of steel cans saves 1.5 tonnes of iron ore, 0.5 tonnes of coal and 40% water usage. To put this in perspective, recycling just seven steel cans saves enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 26 hours.

Nicola Bennett, Sustainability Projects Manager, said, "The target we are setting is hugely ambitious and one which needs the support of the British public in order to turn the objective into a reality.

Local Authority recycling has increased exponentially over recent years, however awareness of what packaging is made from steel and can be recycled is still relatively low and needs to be increased. The SCRIB will help us increase recycling."
