How London's New Year Fireworks Set An Optimistic Tone For 2012
It's just a feeling - and let's be honest, there's no science in this. But I have a hunch that this could be a very good year.
This may sound strange coming from someone writing on a showery Monday morning, post Christmas and post new year eve - someone too who's recuperating four days after surgery (true).
I'm no psychic, but I can see beyond the drizzle of a January bank holiday and the thrice daily medications that are part of my current routine - feeling genuinely inspired about what lies ahead.
Quite possibly it was the breathtaking fireworks that graced London's skyline in the first few minutes of 2012 that put a spring in my step - and certainly if confidence is a close ally of optimism, it made absolute sense. That extraordinary display that darted elegantly around Big Ben and the London Eye to the delight and surprise of millions welcomed a year that although economically bleak does have another spectacle, the Olympics, as the jewel in its crown.
Yes, it takes more than a few million pounds' worth of pyrotechnics to make a good year and, true, that visual feast can't reasonably fulfil in barely twelve minutes the promise of twelve months. But importantly, it was a fine start and, with an admirable flourish, set the tone for a year that maybe, just maybe, can deliver for us all.
