Lily Robinson scores consumer triumph after Sainsbury's changes name of Tiger Bread to Giraffe Bread
Three-and-a-half-year-old Lily Robinson has learned an early lesson in consumer power after encouraging supermarket giant Sainsbury's to rename one of its bread products.
Lily wrote to Sainsbury's to ask why its Tiger Bread was so-named when it looks much more like a giraffe. Chris King, who worked in the company's customer service team, spotted her letter.
Chris responded: "Renaming tiger bread giraffe bread is a brilliant idea - it looks much more like the blotches on a giraffe than the stripes on a tiger, doesn't it?"
Lily's mum posted the correspondence on her blog and the exchange started trending on Twitter, becoming a topic of conversation on social media networks. A single post on Facebook about the tiger bread letters was liked over 150,000 times and shared over 48,000 times. Meanwhile, Chris became something of an Internet celebrity - he now has a Facebook fanpage and the Wikipedia entry for tiger Bread also mentions the exchange between Lily and Chris.
Following hundreds of blog posts and phone calls from customers, together with coverage in the media, Sainsbury's has made a big decision, inspired by a small girl. "We think that renaming tiger bread to giraffe bread is a great idea and want to thank Lily for helping us see the spots for what they are," the company said.
