Legend Alec Stewart lifts Newdigate to victory with his Cricket Masterclass
Former England wicketkeeper batsman Alec Stewart celebrated Bank Holiday Sunday by helping Newdigate CC to a storming start to the new season.
Newdigate won their first prize of the year, a Scrumpy Jack & nPower Masterclass with England legend Alec Stewart OBE and, with a little help from more than 200 supporters, were victorious, scoring 250 runs in their 40 overs.
Visitors, Wraysbury CC, finished just short, scoring 211 runs before they were bowled out in the three overs short.
The bank holiday weekend weather was glorious with the Scrumpy Jack & nPower Masterclass taking place at 1pm on the Newdigate CC pitch at The Brocus, Newdigate two hours before the match began.
The competition had been open to all the teams entering the nPower Village Cricket Cup and Newdigate's successful entry made their opening game of the competition, against Wraysbury CC, on Sunday that much more important.
Alec Stewart OBE, the most capped English cricketer of all time with 133 appearances, was present to warm up the Newdigate team, providing tips and advice drawn from his illustrious career at the pinnacle of international cricket.
Making the day even more special was Stewart's passion for cricket and in particular for Surrey Cricket, as he remains an Ambassador for the County.
Stewart commented; "It has been a wonderful day. I was delighted to be invited to play a small part in preparing the Newdigate team for their opening game. It's always nice to be able to pass on some of the knowledge that I gained throughout my cricketing career, especially as the winners of The Scrumpy Jack & nPower Masterclass are a Surrey team. Not that I am biased of course! It's great that Scrumpy Jack & nPower are supporting the grassroots of the game and in doing so are helping English cricket."
