Kayak Sprint World Cup GB off to a flier as Liam Heath and Jonathan Schofield strike gold

Great Britain were off to a flying start at the Kayak Sprint World Cup in Duisburg when Liam Heath and Jonathan Schofield won gold on the first day. The pair, who won in Hungary last month, pipped the Belarusian team of Raman Piatrushenka and Vadzim Makhneu in the men's 200m K2 event.

In addition to the welcomed gold the British team also won two bronze medals in the men’s and women’s events.

In the men's K1 200m, Ed McKeever won bronze behind Germans Ronald Rauhe and Jonas Ems while in the women's K1 event, Rachel Cawthorn also won bronze behind another German winner Nicole Reinhardt.

Tim Brabants, who has recently returned to the sport after winning two golds in the Beijing Olympics, will compete in the Men's K1 1,000m race on Saturday and the 500m event a day later.

The 33-year-old will be hoping to improve after finishing seventh in Hungary in his first major final for two years.
