Eight out of 35 European cities have been shortlisted for the European Green Capital 2010 and 2011 titles. Three of them are from Germany.

The nominees are Amsterdam (Netherlands), Bristol (United Kingdom), Copenhagen (Denmark), Freiburg (Germany), Hamburg (Germany), Münster (Germany), Oslo (Norway) and Stockholm (Sweden).

Europe is now an essentially urban society, with four out of five Europeans living in towns.

The European Green Capital Award has been conceived to promote and reward commitment and innovations to resolve environmental challenges.

"It has been a really tough job to choose between the 35 applicant cities, with so many impressive ideas and results already achieved,“ said Ms Maria Berrini, Director of the consultancy Ambiente Italia and member of the evaluation panel
