Have you got a brilliant business idea that would make the world a better place?

55,000 people in the UK have already set up businesses based on social enterprise. Social enterprises are simply businesses with aims which are primarily social or environmental and whose surpluses are ploughed back into the business or community rather than for personal gain. Young people are embracing this trend with gusto.

At Young Voice 08, a conference aimed specifically at young social entrepreneurs, FroYo! was awarded the ‘Make your Mark in 60 seconds' prize for social entrepreneurship.  Their idea for ethically, organically, locally produced frozen yoghurt won the public vote and will receive up to £5,000 to make the idea a reality.

The winner was announced at the Young Voice 08 conference by Tim Campbell, winner of the first series of The Apprentice and founder of the Bright Ideas Trust, a London based charity aiming to provide financial support and advice to the next generation of young entrepreneurs.

One of the UK's most well known entrepreneurs, Peter Jones, believes that young people's ideas can go a long way to solving social and environmental issues. He comments: "It is possible to make money and change the world but to do so you need to be as rigorous as you would be coming up with a purely commercial idea. Start small but think big about the impact you can have on a particular issue, and collaborate with others to help you achieve it."

Social enterprises generate £27 billion a year in the UK, operating in a wide range of sectors, from health to retail to real estate.  If you are thinking about starting your own social enterprise, or you are already running one, why not tell us about it by commenting in the box below.
