Endangered cao vit gibbon population increases in Chinese-Vietnam border

The rare cao vit gibbon population has doubled in size according to census carried out in September 2007 by Flora & Fauna International (FFI) teams in China and Vietnam.

It is estimated that there are only about 100 cao vit gibbons remaining in the world.

The species is only found in one location in the world, on the international border between Vietnam and China.

FFI’s conservationists in Vietnam and China are working with local government and communities to reduce the threats to the population.

Locals are introduced to fuel-efficient stoves and pig-manure biogas plants are being developed to reduce the demand for fuel wood.

The FFI’s China and Vietnam Primate Programme has proved that success can be achieved when countries put aside their political differences to come together for the sake of their natural heritage.
