Coronation Street actress Beverley Callard recovers from breakdown
Coronation Street star Beverley Callard says she's well on the road to recovery after suffering a nervous breakdown – and will work with the charity Mind to highlight mental health issues.
Beverley, who plays Rovers Return landlady Liz McDonald, was written out of the ITV soap while being treated in the Priory Clinic.
Viewers heard last year that Liz had gone off to Spain to stay with son Andy, but didn't – until now – realise what was happening behind the scenes. Now after months of treatment, Beverley has spoken for the first time of the experience.
"I feel it is really important to try and help lift the stigma that makes life so difficult for the 1 in 4 people who experience mental health problems," she said. "I have been speaking to the mental health charity Mind about lending my support to the work they do."
Beverley also thanked her friends, family and colleagues - who were aware of what she was going through - for their support and love during a difficult time.
Paul Farmer, CEO at Mind, said: "Her story is testament that people who experience mental distress can recover, and can continue to lead full and rewarding lives. We hope that her inspiring story will help to raise awareness about an issue which is sadly still misunderstood. We encourage anyone who may be suffering in silence to reach out for help and urge those that they turn to be there for them without judgement."
Mind helps people take control of their mental health by providing information and advice and campaigning to promote and protect good mental health for everyone.
