Community Tour across United States celebrates volunteers

An extraordinary 2,300 mile journey through America is celebrating and bonding communities.

Over eight weeks, participants in the the 2012 Community Tour, launched by the Cabot Creamery Cooperative and local community organisations, will follow the East Coast Greenway from Miami to Portland, ME.

Being a traffic-free path, it enables cyclists and walkers to participate in the tour. One of them is Bob Spiegelmen, 61, a retired human resource consultant from Londonderry, NH. He logs 10,000 miles annually on his bike.

The two-month programme celebrating those who give their hearts, time and skills to strengthen communities began in Miami, Florida, and is continuing up the East Coast, culminating in Portland, Maine, on July 7th - declared the International Day of Cooperatives.

Featuring fun community and family oriented events, eight major weekend stops will be held in key cities along the route. Additionally, smaller weekday events will take place at stops in between the key cities. While events and activities will vary by city, the overall theme of cooperatives, community service and volunteerism will be the hallmark of each celebration.

Cabot Creamery Cooperative and local community organizations along the East Coast launched the 2012 Community Tour on May 12th in Miami to celebrate volunteers and organizations that give their time and skills to strengthen communities.

At the Grand Finale in Portland, Cabot will announce the Reward Volunteers Grand Prize winners. Reward Volunteers, is a new mobile app that allows volunteers to log hours, post to Facebook and earn rewards for volunteer service, for themselves and the non-profits they serve.  Since its launch in February, 1037 volunteers in 46 states have logged volunteer hours for 727 non-profit organisations, including food banks, women's shelters, animal rescue centers and children's organisations.
