Neil Thornton Trek to Peru supports The Horse Trust for its 125th anniversary

He worked for the Household Cavalry at Knightsbridge barracks during the Hyde Park and Regent's Park bombings in London in 1982, when a horse - Sefton - was critically injured.

Now Neil Thornton is supporting The Horse Trust, where Sefton was later retired and lived until his death in 1993.

Neil, 52, from High Wycombe was keen to help an equine charity as he has a life-long passion for horses, having ridden them and worked with them for much of his life. He undertook a fundraising trek to Peru and during his 10 day trip, he hiked through the Peruvian Andes up to altitudes of 4,400m, towards Macchu Picchu, the lost City of the Incas.

"The trek was hard work, especially with the altitude and heat," said Neil. "I had an amazing time though and met a really nice bunch of people. We all talked to each other to help us keep going."

Neil has raised £3,400 for The Horse Trust, which will go towards the charity's work with rescued and retired working horses at its sanctuary.

Susan Lewis, Fundraising Manager for The Horse Trust said: "We would like to say a big thank you to Neil for taking part in this fundraising trek to raise money for the charity. The money he has raised will help us to continue our work with rescue cases and retired working horses."

The Horse Trust, founded in 1886, is the oldest horse charity in the UK. Based at Speen, Buckinghamshire, it provides a place of retreat for working horses that have served their country or community and nurtures them throughout their final years. The charity also gives sanctuary to horses, ponies and donkeys that have suffered and need special treatment. The Trust funds non-invasive research that advances knowledge of equine diseases, improving diagnosis and treatment and reducing suffering among equines worldwide.

The charity also offers training for professionals and owners, with a focus on equine welfare and quality of life assessment. It's celebrating its 125th anniversary this year and cares for around 90 rescued, abandoned and retired working horses, ponies and donkeys at its sanctuary in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire. To find out more go to The Horse Trust's website go to http://www.horsetrust.org.uk/
