Happy Birthday Volkswagen Community Trust

The Volkswagen Community Trust celebrated its 20th birthday in the Volkswagen plant in Uitenhage, South Africa. The Trust was established in 1988 as a result of negotiations between VWSA employees and management, trade unions and the local community.

The celebration was joined by a high delegation of Volkswagen's World Works Council headed by its Chairman Bernd Osterloh.

In 2008 the Community Trust has donated around 600.000 euros for the improvement of local authorities and for the support of self-help, support and advocacy organisations in the area around Port Elisabeth.

The Trust was established in 1988 as a result of negotiations between VWSA employees and management, trade unions and the local community, and has been managing strategic investment of funds in the communities of Nelson Mandela Bay and Gauteng.

Its aim is to provide the community with the hope to dream, and for these dreams to become a reality. The Trust assists in the creation of independent communities who take control of their own futures, fulfilling its vision to create an environment that will enable individuals and communities to achieve their full worth, capacity and competency in managing their own development. The Trust achieves this by creating and maintaining development projects that promote the acquisition of appropriate education and relevant skills.

In the past 20 years the Community Trust has donated a total amount of around four million euros for social development projects. During the celebrations a new logo for the Community trust and its new website were launched.

Volkswagen SA is the biggest private sector employer in the Eastern Cape - and running a profitable business goes hand-in-hand with investing in the community in which the company operates.
