British tennis number one Elena Baltacha wins Dow Corning Classic in Michigan

British number one Elena Baltacha stands poised to break into the world’s top 60 after winning the Dow Corning Classic in Michigan.

Elena, now fully recovered from a succession of career threatening injuries, dropped her first set of the tournament but came roaring back to earn a three-set victory over top seeded Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic.

After losing the first set 5-7, the Suffolk-based player fought back to take the next two sets 6-2 6-3.

Britain’s top female player said afterwards; “I am a completely different player these days.” No one doubts that and with the victory is worth 140 ranking points to the 26-year-old, who reached round three of this year's Australian Open, further progress towards that critical top fifty is certain.

Baltacha is seeded eighth for this week's WTA event in Memphis and plays Renata Voracova in round one and will clearly go into the tournament full of optimism.
