Sprint sensation Jodie Williams leads GB to third place in the European Junior Championships

The sensational Hertfordshire sprinter Jodie Williams failed in her bid to win a hat trick of gold medals in the European Junior Championships in Estonia.

After winning both the 100 and 200 metres individual sprints, she could only claim bronze in the 4 x 100 metres relay.

But even in defeat she staked her claim as the athlete of the championships as the 17 year old pulled the British team up from sixth to third, running out of yards as she closed rapidly on the leaders Germany, who took gold in 43.42 seconds, beating a 23-year-old European Junior record, with Italy in second (44.52) and Britain third (45.00).

There was, however, better news in the longer relay where Britain won gold after beating Poland by a slender 0.06 seconds to clinch the women's 4x400m relay.

Anchor Kirsten McAslan outpaced the pack to secure gold with Katie Kirk, Lucy James and Amelia Clifford.

The men's 4x100m sprint team, meanwhile, were narrowly beaten by France who finished in a time of 39.35 seconds to Britain's 39.48. Poland were third in 40.42.

The GB team ended the championships with 15 medals, including six gold with five silver and four bronze, to finish third on the medal table behind Russia and Germany.
