British people turn to sex in the credit crunch

As the credit crunch bites, resourceful Britons are looking for budget ways to keep themselves amused. And they're turning to an age-old solution - sex!

Sexual health charity the Terence Higgins Trust has commissioned a YouGov survey of over 2,000 people in the UK, which shows the increasing popularity of making love.

As the organisation points out, condom sales are reportedly up, backing the findings of its poll. A packet of condoms costs a fraction of the cost of a night out and experts say exercise is one way to keep those happy hormones flowing.

Lisa Power, Head of Policy at Terrence Higgins Trust said: "We're glad that people are finding ways of relieving some of their credit crunch woes, but if there's one thing it's worth forking out for, it's condoms.  Alternatively you can get them free from family planning and sexual health clinics."

Passion levels may also be tied to the cold weather as the survey suggests they are higher in the North and reduce the further South you go.

Scots appear to be the most passionate with 43% of them claiming that sex is their favourite free activity - while London and the rest of the South trailed at 35%.

There may also be a gender difference. The Terence Higgins Trust's questionaire found that women still prefer to gossip with friends while men put sex firmly at the top of their list.

Passion levels increasing in cold weather? That's strange, I've always experienced the opposite effect, feeling sexier in the summertime.
