Women donate their bras to Oxfam in memory of cancer drug campaigner Alyson Porter

Women are being urged to donate their bras to the developing world in memory of a campaigner who fought for the wider availability of the cancer drug Herceptin.

Mother of two Alyson made headlines in her fight to be treated. Herceptin, which can increase the life expectancy of cancer sufferers, was at the time of her diagnosis not widely available on the NHS due to the high cost of treatment.

Sadly she lost her battle against the disease earlier this year, but thanks to Alyson and other patients' determination, many other women now benefit from the drug.

Now, Laserase Northwest, where Alyson worked as a laser specialist and aesthetic nurse-practitioner, is staging a major fundraising event this Thursday, October 23.

It's asking the people to send them their old bras and donate £1. The money raised will be split between Bolton Royal Hospital's Breast Unit, where Alyson was treated, and Breast Cancer Care, which was her favourite charity.

Denise Leslie from Laserase said: "We want to collect as many bras as we can, which will then be strung up on washing lines around our clinic premises in the grounds of the Bolton Royal Hospital. We are also working with Oxfam so that the bras we collect are sent to the developing world.

"We hope to make this an annual event and I know that Alyson herself would have approved. We are hoping to make this an annual event and now it's up to the generosity of women to support ‘Bras for Aly' and send us their old bras."

Alyson married earlier this year and her husband Dave has given his full support in dedicating this fund raiser to such an inspirational woman.

Bras and the £1 donations can be sent to the Laserase Clinic in Redgate Way, Royal Bolton Hospital. For further information log on to www.laserasenorthwest.co.uk , or telephone               01204 570900
