London Student Awards winner Simone Capp inspired by visit to Hollyoaks
A promising drama student, whose film script impressed TV bosses, says she's inspired to become an actress after spending a day behind the scenes of Channel 4 drama Hollyoaks.
Simone Capp visited the studios of Lime Pictures in Liverpool after winning the drama category of the London Student Awards, which celebrate the achievements of talented young people.
The awards highlight the next generation of writers, scientists, entrepreneurs, artists and musicians – studying in London's state secondary schools. The 2009 awards had the theme 'My School, My City and Me' and were open to students in Years 9 and 10, covering seven categories – art and design, music, drama, creative writing, business & enterprise, science, and ICT.
As well as gaining an insight into the workings of the TV industry, Simone was able to talk to production staff and meet some of the stars of Hollyoaks.
"It made me see that acting is an achievable career for ordinary people like me," Simone said. "I do acting both inside and outside of school and am a member of a drama club in London, Class Act. I'm going to audition for drama colleges when I leave school and really hope to be an actress one day."
Simone was rewarded for her film script about a young girl who can't get to grips with school until a strange experience helps her see things in a different light. She wanted to write something that would get students at her school to think ahead and not rely on second chances.
Her screenplay is based on a ‘Groundhog Day' concept in which a teenager wakes up every morning to find that it is always the same Tuesday. On this day, there's an important exam and a chance for the character to get involved in an extracurricular drama project by helping a friend with his part.
To begin with, she is negative and uncooperative. But, being able to repeatedly relive the day, she eventually revises properly for the exam, does her best, and takes part in the drama project. The positive message of the piece, though, is that you need to plan ahead.
