Free Chickens to Reduce Household Waste in Belgium

The town of Mousron, Belgium has 50 pairs of chickens to give away to households to help reduce waste.

The families have to have enough garden space for them and they have to promise not to eat or give away the chickens for at least 2 years.

The town council is building up the program after starting it in a small way, with great success. The families are assured a steady supply of eggs and will be given instruction in how to look after the chickens.

The families participating have already shown that they are making efforts to reduce waste and the free chickens are an encouragement to continue as well as to show other families the benefits.

The town council hopes to increase awareness of alternative methods of managing waste.
