Global restaurant company Pizza Hut's read-aloud programme BOOK IT! Beginners will be featuring the very popular book series of Charlie and Lola for its 2009 initiative.
Pizza Hut created and sponsored the programme, established in 1998 and reaching over 1.7 million children, with the objective to develop a lifelong love of reading in children by encouraging teachers to read aloud to students in preschool and pre-kindergarten.
The 2009 program launched on March 2 and to last through to April 24, will see an estimated 35,000 preschools and child-care facilities participating this year. Teachers would have received a free programme packet that features Charlie and Lola theme-related materials for the classroom and for parents to use at home.
"Charlie and Lola use their imaginative personalities to navigate through their worlds -- experiences children can relate to. The adventures in the Charlie and Lola books encourage kids' curiosity about the world around them and makes reading fun," said BOOK IT! Beginners program director Leslie Brunt said.
Over eight weeks teachers will read to the children for at least 60 minutes a week. At the end of each four-week period, every child is rewarded with a certificate for a free Personal Pan Pizza(R) to redeem at participating Pizza Hut locations.
Children participating in the BOOK IT! Beginners programme graduate to the BOOK IT! National Reading Incentive Programme for kindergarten through sixth grade students. Nearly one million classrooms nationwide are enrolled onto the award-winning BOOK IT! Program.
