Bike The Planet - ahead of United Nations Earth Summit 2012

It is a 30-month expedition, by bicycle and ship aiming to connect with everyone from grassroots folk to government leaders – inspiring and empowering them to achieve the collective shift required for survival on Earth.

The team behind Bike The Planet explains that their challenge will show "it's smart to dare" and adds: "there is a different journey we need to take on this earth – if we really are to change where we are heading."

They'll set off from Melbourne, Australia in the middle of this month and conclude at the United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in December 2012. En route, its team of cyclists will lead conferences to inspire local people to be agents of change in their community. They'll also gather evidence of the best examples of sustainability along the way in the hope of engaging with Government leaders about policy changes ahead of the summit.

The cyclists say that making the trip by bike – human powered as it is - beautifully demonstrates living sustainably with a small footprint.  And they believe that cycling through communities enables them to communicate in an accessible, unobtrusive and friendly way with local people, whatever the culture or terrain.

"Do you want us to make an impact in your local community?" they ask. "To invite us to a local festival? To sponsor an event in your local town hall? To support us with materials or accommodation in return for publicity?"

They urge those inspired by their project to click on their website: www.biketheearth.org.uk

Celebrated explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes has paid tribute to Bike The Planet, saying: "This brave expedition is a far-sighted response to a threatening challenge: how to avoid outstripping Earth's resources and restore the balance between Man and Nature. I wish you and those taking part on Bike the Earth success in raising the funds you need and in achieving the expedition's aims."

After showcasing its findings at the summit in Rio de Janeiro, the team is expected to arrive in New Zealand mid 2013.
