Thousands join 9th Annual No Pants Subway Ride
It's the coldest time of the year for many, but that hasn't stopped thousands of people across the world taking part in the annual No Pants Subway Ride, which sees commuters discarding trousers and skirts for a breezy journey to work.
It's the ninth year of the stunt, organised by Improv Everywhere – which causes scenes of chaos and joy in public places. Three thousand people are estimated to have joined in the fun in New York alone, making their usual journeys in their underwear.
Thrill seekers at 43 other cities around the world in 16 countries are also believed to have marked the day, with contributions from Japan, Argentina, and Sweden. The only requirements for participation are that you are willing to take off your trousers on the subway
- and keep a straight face about it.
The organisers said of the New York event: "Riders met at meeting points spread out all over the city and converged on Union Square. The high was 28 degrees Fahrenheit – minus 2.2 centigrade."
Participant Sarah Jackson in Edmonton, Canada explained: "People you know look around, they're curious and interested and for some reason I feel incredibly comfortable in my underwear."
