Forty mile party along closed German motorway, the A40 autobahn, celebrates European Capital of Culture

A40 Autobahn party

It was a party on a grand scale – with over two million party-goers, as crowds of people joined a street party on a 40-mile stretch of specially-closed German motorway.

They turned out to enjoy a weekend of partying along a section of the A40 autobahn linking Bochum and Dortmun, closed for the Ruhr.2010 European Capital of Culture festivities.

A 37-mile picnic table was one of the chief attractions and as event spokeswoman Katharina Jarzombek explained: "The motto of the Still-Life event is 'The table is your stage'. Anybody can showcase their band, their hobby, their club or their group of friends."

Sections of the road portions were dedicated to birthday parties, comedians and even a wedding celebration. A lane of the motorway was kept also free for cyclists and skaters.

What a great idea bringing life to otherwise dull stretches of road - so long as it doesn't cause too much congestion elsewhere. It could do wonders for the M25!
