The 2009 Sahara Marathon will take place on February 23rd to raise fund for humanitarian efforts and awareness on the Saharawi refugees’ plight in the Western Sahara.

Last year's marathon saw 550 participants, with 350 of them being foreign supporters from 21 countries.

Former Marathon World Champion Martín Fiz has confirmed his participation in 2009 Sahara Marathon.

Organised by volunteers from all over the world, the marathon includes the standard distance of 42km, shorter distances of 21km, 10km and 5km, and also a race for children which is aimed at promoting sport activity among young Saharawis.

Proceeds from this event will go to the construction of a sport centre for children in Dhakla in southern Morocco where the most remote refugee camp surrounded by the desert is situated.
